Virginia's Heritage Music Trail
“The Crooked Road” is Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a driving route through the Appalachian Mountains from the western slopes of the Blue Ridge to the Coalfields region of the state. The traditional gospel, bluegrass, and mountain music heard today was passed down from generation to generation and lives on through a wealth of musicians and instrument makers along the trail. Annual festivals, weekly concerts, live radio shows, and informal jam sessions abound throughout the region. In addition, this region is also rich in other cultural and natural assets, particularly crafts and outdoor recreation in lush valleys and rugged mountains.
Discover Asheville's Swimming Holes
Western North Carolina boasts more waterfalls, swimming holes, lakes and streams than you can shake a stick at. And Asheville is a perfect home base whether you’re looking for cold, clear mountain streams, challenging rapids, or just a serene swimming hole to wade into. Some of the best swimming holes are in Asheville’s backyard, barely hidden from view. If you’re lucky, you might stumble onto one after a long hike – feeling like you’ve walked into a dream – but for everyone else there’s this concise guide to the best swimming holes in the area. Some things are too good to keep to yourself.

The Blue Ridge Parkway has been a favorite place of mine since I met my husband. We love packing a picnic and stopping at one of the many beautiful places along the parkway. Linville Gorge makes for a great quick hike. A slight detour into Pisgah Forest near Hendersonville will take you to Looking Glass falls, right by the road! There is plenty to do and see along the parkway!!! Bonus: In the fall you can't choose a better way to view the changing leaves!

The Oconaluftee Living Indian Village is my all-time favorite place to visit. The tour is extremely informative of the Cherokee life, history, and culture, including little known details about the government and women's roles in the tribe. They also tell about the very moving subject of "The Trail of Tears". All of this information is given by authentic tribe members in a small village of authentic buildings. I would highly recommend to adults and their children over 10 years old.

Asheville This city is by far the most beautiful place in the south! It can be two things, depending on which side you are looking from. A quaint, country town nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains, or, as it is nicknamed, the "Paris of the South!" Every time you look around, you are shocked by the beauty of the natural surroundings! Just minutes away from what would seem like a bustling city like Atlanta or Charelston you are surrounded by benevolent azealas, soaring trees offering shade and crystal-clear creeks winding through the woods. It is right next to the famous Blue Ridge Parkway (which winds through it) and the most visited National Park in America is just miles away, the Great Smoky Mountains.

Oconaluftee Village
The wood smoke drifting on the breeze isn’t like any you’ve smelled before. There’s something earthy about this fire, because it’s smoldering pitch pine, firing local Cherokee clay into gleaming blackware pottery. Then again, all the sights, sounds, and scents surrounding you today are novel. Here in the Oconaluftee Indian Village, it’s 1750. You’ve been taken back two centuries before your birth, and the old Cherokee ways are alive all around you. Experience the mountain life of the Cherokee Indians in Oconaluftee Indian Village, which was voted "Travel Attraction of the Year" by the Southeast Tourism Society for 2006.
Biltmore Gardens
Stroll acres of formal and informal gardens designed by America's foremost landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. From the formal beauty of the Italian Garden to America's first managed forests, Biltmore's lush landscape in America's Southern Highlands is a living tribute to Olmsted's genius. The Foxfire Museum
Imagine a time before electricity, hot-and-cold running water, the comfort of department stores. Imagine a time when most of what you owned, you made yourself. Time felt different then, its rhythm and urgencies shaped by the most basic needs. Visitors can now be a part of that era at the Foxfire Museum in Mountain City, Georgia. You will receive a rare glimpse of what life was like for the mountaineers who settled this area over 150 years ago. The Foxfire Museum is centered around a collection of over 20 historic log cabins and replicas of traditional log construction designs, with some of the authentic structures dating back to the early 1800s.

Great Smoky Mountains Golf
Great Smoky Mountains golf is played in the Highlands where Western North Carolina meets East Tennesee. Here, the Great Smokies weave in and out of the Blue Ridge, creating the stage for a great game of golf. These courses offer the best in Tennessee and North Carolina golf. This magnificent setting attracts golfers drawn by our scenic beauty and pleasant four-season climate, but the primary attraction to mountain golf is lush fairways, sprawling bent grass greens, cool breezes, and a gently undulating terrain reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands where the game originated 200 years ago.
